what a lovely, little vintage book. selected and edited by irwin edman, "the works of plato" is now 90+-years-old. it's a literary jewel.
the 1928 acknowledgements include a thanks to the oxford university press. it was published by the modern library, random house/new york, with the copyright 1928/simon and schuster, inc.
i thought the book looked beautiful and might be a textbook. i discovered it among many shelves of nice books at a wonderful estate sale. based on their taste, this was from a well-educated, well-read family, with many old books and a lot of those from university studies. i suspect one or more family members might have been a professor, perhaps beginning internationally.
when i arrived home and examined the book more closely, i felt stunned that the book was this old. it looked in such excellent shape that, at first, i thought i had the publication date wrong and this might be a later edition. but no, it really is that old.
after researching a book, i do my best to price things toward the lower end of a range. this book is most likely a bargain at this price. because it's so rare, it was tough to find comparables.
