when i spotted this heavyweight skillet and its interesting-looking lid at a massive house's estate sale in overland park, kansas, i thought it might be something extra special. as soon as i picked it up, i knew it was. no skillet made today is that heavy!
it is very, very rare to find both the original parts of the two-piece pan and lid set. no other set was for sale online.
turns out, this is possibly from the early 1930s. the large skillet is a 10" size. it has a black bakelite handle, just over 7" long. it does show some cooking discolorations around edges, though in overall remarkably clean and good condition. the one real issue is the bottom of the skillet. one portion is raised in the center. it could be described as a "dent," yet it really doesn't seem as if it would affect usability. in fact, the skillet and lid feel like something commercial that could be in any chef's kitchen.
the lid is also quite heavyweight. the black bakelite handle is a squared shape (i did not find any handle like this for sale online). one small round part will raise to let steam vent. it is still operational, lifted from below in one of the photos to show this.
this vintage skillet and lid have held up over time and could make a great addition to your kitchen. its retro look is beautiful and timeless. the weight is comparable to something cast iron.
vintage item, as-is (please look through all the photos), with some wear and tear, scratching from abrasive cleaning, and the aforementioned dent (you can feel it, but it is not immediately noticeable if you are looking inside the pan)
if you're beginning to stock your first kitchen, this is a great item for you, something that will last a lifetime, upcycling a quality product from the past.
priced below what i could sell it for, leaving some room for dealers to still make a profit...or for you to nab a real bargain for yourself
this old-school item, best of all, was made in the usa.
