when it's a good one, it's a good one. this old-time book is beloved in country kitchens. i found this book in an antiques store in missouri farmland, where i am guessing it lived in the same kitchen until the cook passed away and someone sold off the belongings. otherwise, most cooks did not part with this cookbook.
this 1963 first edition is a hardback book. throughout its pages, it features 16 glossy, beautifully-colored photographs to add to its charm. it is fairly rare to find for sale online.
the book is divided into two main sections, with eight chapters on freezing food and seven chapters on canning food.
the dust jacket is missing some of the lower portion on the front and has some of the photo/print missing on the top third of the back part.
the book definitely shows its age, with some stains, yellowed pages, and a few bends here and there. but overall, it's usable and in decent shape, easy to still use in any kitchen today. it shows a few spots of mold or a burn on four or five pages.
inside the book between pages 240-241, i am leaving a handwritten recipe for strawberry-banana shortcake, jotted in cursive on a vintage piece of notepad paper from a printing company.
the book was edited by nell b. nichols, the field food editor for "farm journal." it was published by doubleday & company, inc. (garden city/new york).
the photographs was done by "farm journal" food and art staff. the book jacket design was created by al reagan, from the "farm journal" art department.
