this pressed glass doggie was in my own belongings, handed down to me. these dogs and many other items were made by l.e. smith glass company in mount pleasant, pennsylvania. the scottie dogs were in honor of president franklin delano roosevelt's dog, fala.
the l.e. smith glass company created glass products for almost ten decades, for 98 years.
these minature dogs came in different styles. the sitting up/begging scottie dog like this is rare to find. originally, these dogs were on top of a cardboard container of candy (not included).
the "clear" glass is actually see-through, but with a tint slightly more tan or amber. some people call this type of glass different names: pressed glass, depression pressed glass, or federal glass.
a seam runs down both the front and the back of the dog, part of the manufacturing process from a mold. the glass feels smooth in most places, with both ears feeling sharper. with today's safety standards, the glass dog is not a toy.
this doggie is in remarkable condition, with no issues whatsoever, except what appears to be old-school rubber glue perhaps dabbed on the bottom. i suspect this is where the dog was attached to the candy's cardboard and some safety-concerned momma wanted the rougher portion here to feel smoother.
