when i spotted this book at an overland park, kansas family's sale, i knew it might be special. they had kept many items from their children's childhoods.
sure enough, i opened up that interesting-looking retro-green and tan cover with the cute vintage-style artwork and the winking sun, finding a detailed, serious curriculum. the book is thin and an unusual shape, somewhere between square and rectangular.
i majored in elementary education, was a 5th and 6th grade reading tutor, and was a volunteer for the "rif" ("reading is fundamental") program
inside the front cover, a school library-style paper was pasted, with an ink-penned teacher's name and five ink-penned student names, each using the book, starting in 1961.
it was written by william kottmeyer and ann ware, both affiliated with the st. louis, missouri public schools. it was published in 1960 by webster publishing company, st. louis, missouri, produced for the topeka [kansas] board of education and distributed in the topeka, kansas public schools.
if you are a homeschooler, this book could be a nice resource. the table of contents shows everything it covers. the book even instructs students on how to create some lovely cursive handwriting.
the book is in good condition, though not perfect. the cover actually has more issues than the pages inside. it shows wear and tear and aging. but overall, it is quite clean and in very nice shape for a book this old and this used.
it would look perfect as vintage decor in a classroom, office, nursery, child's room, or homeschooling area. sit it on an easel, stand it up, or lean it on a shelf or on a fireplace mantel.
at the time i wrote this listing, i could not find any other 1960 editions of this hardcover book.
