attention, homeschoolers. attention, grandparents. this book is wonderful to add to your collection.
this retelling uses a fresh storyline. the little red hen is hungry. she already ate the last of her bread. she also sipped chickweed tea and took a nap. she sees some tomato sauce and thinks: pizza!
she needs a pizza pan. but the duck, the dog, and the cat don't have one. the little red hen needs a trip to the store. then, whoops, she needs flour. no luck from the duck, the dog, or the cat. so off to the supermarket goes the little red hen.
and then, nope, no mozzarella and no help from her friends, so off to the delicatessen.
the friends aren't interested in helping her make the pizza dough or adding the toppings.
this little red hen does not eat the pizza all by herself--she shares (and she also uses lovely manners throughout the book). she does ask for help doing the dishes. and guess what? the three friends do all the dishes while the little red hen has some more chickweed tea.
the book uses an urban setting. the text and artwork are straight-up quirky and clever, with vivid colors and details.
this creative version of the little red hen is written by philemon sturges. it is illustrated by amy walrod.
