this gorgeous book's title is "the little red hen/a folk tale classic." it was originally published in 1979, with the copyright renewed in 2001. this edition is from 2011, but looks brand-new.
in this retelling, the hen lives in a house with a cat, a dog, and a mouse. the cat, the dog, and the mouse sleep all day. meanwhile, the hen does all the housework and all the yardwork and gardening.
instead of bread, the hen makes a cake. the rest of the story goes the traditional way--no one helping, but then wanting to eat the cake and the hen eating every crumb herself. but the book's twist the last pages is that the other three animals have learned their lesson and after that, help with all the work.
the book uses interesting fonts throughout its pages, kids will have fun spotting those. the illustrations are quirky.
if you're a homeschooling family, this book is a durable, fun addition for your library.
if you're a grandparent, how about keeping this book at your house for some sweet story time with your grandchildren?
this copy is from my own home, a non-smoking home. the book has never been a library book or even used by any children at our house. i'm a writer and bought the book to study the market in children's publishing, since this book is considered very successful.
i've priced this book very low in order to help increase my sales and reduce my inventory.
