this beautiful, high-quality paperback is one of my favorite all-time novels.

"the good earth" is by pearl s. buck, who grew up living much of her childhood as a missionary with her family in china. after marrying her first husband, they also lived in china.

the novel is powerful. it tells the broad story of china's changes, focusing on farmer wang lung and his wife o-lan. it covers the chinese culture, differences in the wealthy and impoverished, the political tumult after the last emperor, and the struggles of their society's adjustments.

if you love history or love farming or just love a good story with great characters, this book will probably become one of your favorites, too.

pearl s. buck later won the nobel prize in literature in 1938. she was the very first american female to win this.
