it's tricky to determine the year this was published and which printing it was. please look at the copyright page in the photos. the book's text and illustrations were copyrighted in 1985.

this is a copy from my own home. it looks nearly pristine. if you saw it on a shelf, it appears in new condition.

if you're a grandparent, this book would be wonderful to keep at your house for story time with the little ones.

if you're a homeschooling family, this book could be an economical addition to your library.

this retelling is done with artwork by lucinda mcqueen. the colors are bright.

this particular version takes place with the hen living in a cottage she shares with a goose, a cat, and a dog. the goose gossips. the cat is vain. the dog is always sleeping. and the hen, well, you guessed it--she is always working hard. in addition to all her household and yard chores, she does the shopping, too. then it turns into gardening when she finds some grains of wheat. and you know the rest of the story.
