this little gem is in amazing condition. a few copies are usually available here and there, but it is fairly rare to find one for sale. this copy is in very, very good condition, complete with dust jacket.

the recipes for game work for camp cooking or kitchen cooking. the book instructs on how to prepare and store game meat and gives unusual accompaniments to help with varying meals in the wild.
the many sourdough recipes include traditional foods made by hunters and miners, including everything from stew to fruitcake.
the fish recipes include those for all five salmon species, trout, grayling, great northern pike, sheefish, halibut, redsnapper, cod, flounder, herring, smelt, candlefish, sole, tuna, oysters, scallop, crab, and shrimp. the book gives pioneer preparations and recipes as well as international methods and recipes from sweden, norway, denmark, russia, germany, and finland.
and the salmon derby? this refers to the july juneau golden north salmon derby and the august ketchikan silver salmon derby events that sport fishermen went to alaska to compete in each year. the fishermen ended up with these huge fish and needed to know how to cook them.
among the eclectic items collected in the frontier formula recipes, the book includes those for soap, hand lotion, vanilla extract, vinegar, traveler's coffee, and ways to use powdered milk and powdered eggs.

the book originally sold for $3.95. it was published by howell-north books (berkeley, california) in 1960 (this is an original, first edition).
both the book and the dust jacket are in amazing shape, especially for being an item from 1960. it is not an ex-library book. i found the cookbook in a kansas antiques store. the dust jacket shows a tiny bit of aging around the edges, but looks as if it sat unused for decades in a nice kitchen somewhere.
for today's generation living off the grid or wanting to live more simply, this book offers smart, thorough life lessons and excellent, detailed recipes. if you know someone who loves hunting and fishing, this book would be a wonderful gift.
