this is the first edition of the memorial edition, which includes a special foreword by john f. kennedy's brother, robert f. kennedy. the cover shows its original 95-cents price. the foreword is dated december 19, 1963.

in 1989, family members of jfk established the profile in courage award. it is given to a living american who is/was an elected official and risked career or life to act on their conscience instead of following public partisanship or pressure. award-winners are selected by members of the kennedy library foundation.
