this vintage green 1960 hardcover school spelling book catches your eye. the unusual rectangular-squarish shape, the thin design, and the retro artwork shows off it being special. my favorite part is the happy-looking, winking sun on the top right corner of the cover.
it is written by william kottmeyer and kay ware, both affiliated with the st. louis, missouri public schools. it was published by webster publishing company, st. louis, missouri.
inside the front inside cover, a paper student book rental list is pasted in, with the pencil signatures of five actual students.
the book features very, very detailed spelling lessons. it even shows beautiful how-to-do-cursive-writing. it uses a number of varying activities to help reinforce words to the child. it most definitely could be used today by homeschoolers.
as you look through the illustrations, you do notice some changes in the times. example: one illustration for a word showed a gun, something unlikely to appear in today's school books. you will notice other vintage-looking items, like a strap-on metal roller skate, a pipe, a woman's hat, an interesting-looking man, a stove, and a safety pin. some of the nostalgic items may need a bit of explanation to your children.
the book is in great condition, showing some edge wear and tear on the cover, but overall very, very clean and in excellent shape.
it would look adorable on an easel in a classroom, nursery, children's room, or office.
